Families
There are 3 well established mage families in this world, and 2 separate factions. Choosing from them will give you innate advantages. Joining any of the families or 2 factions will guarantee a catalyst for servant summoning (covered later).
Matou Family
Pros: -Extremely adept at Bug based magic, with powerful associated skills -Capable of starting at 100 Mana Cons: -Weaker Physical Bodies -Family is deteriorating rapidly, with the Family Head being of questionable sanity
Tohsaka Family
Pros: -Extremely adept at Gem based magic, with powerful associated skills -Capable of starting at 60 Mana Cons: -Gems are expensive -The family head was murdered, and the entire family is in disarray, with finances, succession, everything out of order.
Einzbern Family
Pros: -Extremely adept at Minion creation, with powerful associated skills -Capable of starting at 100 Mana Cons: -A new Einzbern draws the attention of many, as their creations are what led to the Holy Grail, bringing unwanted attention -Typically the Einzberns in the Holy Grail war are just a tool for the family, expected to do everything they're told.
The Mage Association Pros: - Access to wide funds due to Mage Association backing. - Stronger skills than average due to training from Mage Association
Cons: - You will be expected to do everything you are told - Clashes with the Church often
The Church Pros: - Access to funds and unique items due to Church Backing - Stronger skills than average due to training from the Church
Cons: - Expected to comply with the rules of the church, both in manner fought, and listening to order -Clashes with the Mage's Association often.
Normal Human Pros: -Able to use any skill type, just not as well as the families are at their own chosen skills -Able to start in any mana cap, but will not start at maximum mana. -Free from any and all obligations to Family or Faction
Cons: -No family for support. Any of the the downsides for mana brackets are amplified. - Completely average skills, with the strongest obtained from background. Skills obtained during the war will be weak compared to Families.
Remainder of stats will be determined from starting Mana.

Name: Gent von Leibniz Lineage: Normal Human Starting Mana: 12 (30) Backstory: With his feminine physique, it would be difficult to guess that Gent is a fighting junkie on top of being an assassin... Wait, what? Ever since the age of twelve, Gent was taught that killing was also a means of living (via bounties and contract kills). The only thing that surpasses his fighting urge is his interest in slight-of-hand and card tricks. For an assassin, he's pretty gullible. All of Gent's habits, from giddily threatening people with sharp objects to drop kicking strangers in a unique entrance, were indirectly picked up from his older brother Cant. Gent doesn't find his actions to be peculiar in comparison to others, though; it's likely because everyone he's been associated with since childhood also has questionable habits. Reason for Entering the War: "Wars are just opportunities for fights, right?"

Name: Robert Magus III aka The Magic Collector Leinage: Mage Association Starting Mana: 30 (60) Backstory: A young man from a wealthy family, he one day discovered a secret library on the magicial world. Becoming infatuated, he studied on the craft and soon unlocked his own magical skills. He later decided that his knowledge is limited and used his wealth to travel the world looking for magicial items to collect and study. He would later use the items and books he can find to strengthen his powers so he can find rarer magicial items for his collection. One day, the Mage Association heard rumors of a mage collecting rare artifacts and sent someone to check on it. Upon seeing the natural talents and self taught skills, Robert was invited to join the Association. He agreed as it will help him with his studies and to further his collection. He quickly grew in the ranks despite having minimal actual training. While this gained favors from the higher ups for being a strong addition to their group and his surprising obedience, this also soured the more ordinary members. Especially since he is so strong despite not being from a notable mage family. But to Robert Magus, he does not mind so long as his greed for magicial knowledge and artifacts are not interfered... Reason for Entering the War: Surely these masters will have their own artifacts in hiding. And if I can win the war... (Insert devil grin here)

Name: Gebura Lineage: Normal Human Starting Mana: 15 (60) Backstory: Gebura's job prior to the war involved serving as a mercenary, constantly called upon to fight on the front lines of a variety of conflicts. In time she settled in place for a specific contractor and made a name for herself annihilating anyone, or thing, that attempted to harm the organization. Eventually being titled the "Red Mist" she was able to serve her role as defender of the organization. After a series of schemes resulted in tragedy for the organization, she is lost with an aimless wrath towards anything that reminds her of what she lost and an unending urge to inflict as much pain as possible on 'monsters.' Reason for entering the war: Pain, for others and herself.

One of such things is circumstances of those born in Matou. If you are even slightly knowledgeable in state of affairs of magic world in Japan, you would know all sorts of facts and rumors about Matou. So it isn't hard to imagine what fate befalls one born in that house. It is quite likely everything you would expect and is also quite likely nothing you wouldn't expect. Name: Merlin Lineage: The Mage Association Starting Mana (Mana Cap Chosen): 59 (60) Backstory: Merlin is the Boar's Sin of Gluttony of the Seven Deadly Sins. She is regarded as the greatest mage in Britannia. The name "Merlin" is actually an alias as her true name is unpronounceable to humans. She joined the mage association due to being allowed to help with experiments as well as funding for such experiments due to a quiet period in Britannia. Reason for Entering the War: Merlin is in this war for her own needs, she wants the holy grail to help her on her quest to know all the knowledge of the world

Name: Officially: Burkhard Hildebrant von Einzbern - Uses the name "Miro" Lineage: Einzbern Family Starting Mana (Mana Cap Chosen):1 (60) Backstory: This man is part of the Einzbern family. He hates it, the holy stuff, the family, all of it. He hates it with a burning passion because it costed someone special to him their life. He wants rid of it, and he's tried to find a way to do so without getting involved. He's even gone as far as to completely refuse to train mana or do anything with servants at all. They're all scum in his book. The only reason he's here is because he sees it as the only way to get rid of it. He goes against the values and orders of the family, going as far as hoping nobody even knows that he was born as an Einzbern. The only reason he has a servant is because the catalyst holds emotional value. He's pretty sure the servant is worthless evil garbage. Reason for Entering the War: To rid the world of this retarded ritual.

Backstory: A young, isolated child of the Tohsaka family. When Serena was still quite small, she had gotten severely ill and was sheltered and protected in her home for years, away from the public eye. Very few people knew of her existence, which mostly were the people of the Tohsaka family. Eventually, Serena started to recover from her illness due to treatment. This allowed her to slowly start receiving training and develop as a mage. Serena´s sheltered life came to a complete end when the family head was murdered, bringing disarray and chaos within the family. Leaving her previous isolated life behind, Serena is determined to make things right again and help people in need. No one wants to suffer. No one wishes to die or fall into chaos. Tragedy can be avoided, right?
...Maybe she is simply too naive for the real world.
Reason to Enter the War: An attempt at restoring peace. Especially within the chaos of her family.

Backstory: Reiko was an aspiring and ambitious young mage who lived a spoiled life as her father was a high ranking member within the association. One day. Her father fell ill to an incurable disease and at his death bed, he entrusted Reiko with a secret that only a select few within the association knows about. A top secret project known as "Project Arcania" which involved the creation of special cards called "Arcanas" each of which provide powerful unique abilities to its holder. It's ultimate goal is to create "The World" the most powerful arcana ever made which could theoretically surpass even the power of the Holy Grail itself. After her father's death, Reiko took over the project and continued her father's work and was able to complete all the remaining arcanas and started work on creating The World. However it would require an unworldly amount of energy to use at it's fullest potential and only the Holy Grail could provide the energy needed to make it a work. As such. Reiko armed with the power of the Arcanas sets out to compete in the next Holy Grail War and she'll stop at nothing to obtain the grail and realize her father's dream.
Reason for Entering the War: To realize her father's dream of creating "The World" and transcend the power of the Holy Grail itself.

She is surrounded by oddities like the talking rabbit that also happens to be her grandfather, but takes it all in stride. Her family appears to have some talent for magic, but she never received any formal training. Reason for Entering the War: Unwittingly chosen, she has no idea why any of this is happening.

Noa Lineage: Mage Association Mana: 25(60) Backstory: Noa was not born into a line of prestigious mages but nonetheless inherited some magical prowess. Having had an accident in her past that rendered her a blind cripple, Noa navigates the world in a hazed blur, and with too much time on her hands, she chose to pursue greater heights in honing her magic at the cost of forging social relationships with others. She was by no means a talented prodigy, but she would soon surpass her peers through sheer hard work and perseverance. Noa was closest with her sister who would often visit her during her studies, but with time she visited less and less until he stopped altogether. Having been double crossed by someone she’d believed to be a close friend, Noa’s sister was set to spend the rest of her life behind bars for crimes she didn’t commit without the chance to appeal her case because of a few underhanded manipulations of the system. Hearing of the wish-granting capabilities of the Holy Grail, Noa sacrificed all her time towards becoming a worthy enough mage to compete in hopes of winning the Grail and her sister’s freedom. Reason for Entering the War: To upturn the court’s decision and condemn the person who framed her sister.

However, Hector has garnered many enemies from within the church due to his intolerance of corruption, leading to his selection as an observer in this holy grail war. Heck, he’s even enrolled in a top-notch academy for gifted individuals by sheer talent alone--that oughta tell ya how good he is. Not to mention joining a death game of fifteen other gifted students and coming out on top with like five others. He even took a shot at the Ultimate Martial Artist and left without so much as a scratch on him. You might not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
