Welcome to the Core Systems Explanation! This page covers a general array of base game mechanics involving abilities, win conditions, and other items. These are intended at this time to tie into the Action Post and Truth Assembly Systems. You should probably check out both of those threads first before reviewing the details here, but you are free to do as you please! First thing I need to address is Victory Points!
Culprit/Detective Points & Victory Conditions
During Modernized MMG while there is the core objective of surviving and escaping the game, the winners of the game are calculated slightly differently. Every game under the modernized rules has two Winners that are determined when the game ends based on how many points of each type people have earned. The End of the Game is either when a murderer shuts out all detectives, achieving Falsehood Prevails, or when the final trial concludes and the murder game reaches a plot conclusion. So even if a murderer wins out, The Detective up to that point is still chosen.
Culprit Points: A representation of how well you have mislead your opposing players in crafting and performing Murder. These are earned using the Truth Assembly System when you perform a murder and players submit incorrect theories on it.
Detective Points: A representation of how much you have contributed to resolving mysteries in game, both solving murders and confronting the mastermind's ploy.
There are Two Victory Conditions, in each game one person will achieve each.
Detective Victory
At the end of the season, have the most Detective Points. In the event of a tie, the mastermind will use other details as tiebreakers.
Culprit Victory
At the end of a the season, have the most Culprit Points or Achieve Falsehood Prevails(see Truth Assembly Descripton). In the event of a tie, the mastermind will use other details as tiebreakers.
Death
Death is not the end of the game for you. If you perish in the game you will become a ghost. Ghosts no longer need to make action posts when taking actions, but cannot physically interact with the world and can only observe/examine. You can also still submit final theories in Truth Assembly to earn Detective Points.
Accomplices
There is no benefit to being an accomplice. Nada. Zilch. As such, if there is a willing accomplice, the mastermind will announce it alongside the body discovery report though they won't specify who it is. Willing Accomplices cannot receive detective points for the crime in which they assisted, nor Culprit points. Culprit's may also have points deducted, depending on how much their crime relies on the willing accomplice. It is up to the mastermind what counts as a Willing Accomplice.
Basic Abilities
For the sake of simplicity, all characters are treated as humanoid with standard human abilities by default.
SHSL/Special Abilities
All players get to choose a SHSL/Title upon application and are granted one special ability outside the bounds of basic abilities. These are by default public knowledge and shared at game start for the sake of transparency on what is possible during murders and trials.
Sanity
Ah, the mind is such as fragile thing. Sanity is your deadline for escaping the game. As time passes in the game your sanity will decrease.
All characters by default start with 3-5 Sanity randomly decided by the MM.
Sanity decreases by 1 at the end of each session. You can gain sanity during active sessions by performing normal, everyday actions. These include such fun activities as [eating three meals a day, working out, playing non-murder mystery games, and so on.]
All players will regain Sanity upon successful execution of a culprit in trial.
If your Sanity reaches 0 the MM can force you to make action posts, take actions without your input, and may force you to commit murder/sudoku without prior warning.
