Premise
Long ago, when man had first civilized, before the years were numbered, ten chosen champions of the god Seth rid the world of demons and, upon returning home, established Venilus — A nation built on the principles of equality and democracy, a haven for mankind in a savage world. The descendants of these champions, the ten great families of Venilus, hold dominion over the land to this day.
You are a group of operatives who answer directly to the office of the Prime Minister, the head of the Auzandil family. Recently, the Equin family head has been unable to reach the capital, Kreidal, to meet with the council of heads. His caravan, regardless of what path he attempts to take, has been assailed by an enormous beast. Your mission is to pass through the border town of Priddan and into the Equin city Hilwall, where the beast will be baited into attacking.
Origins
Auzandil - "The red-haired scions of the stars who occupy Venilus' valleys. Auzandil nobles fill the highest class of aristocracy and are far-removed from the lives of their subjects. The turbulent rivalry they share with the Lopt family spans countless generations, and Venilus finds itself in a constant tug-of-war between the two families’ leadership.”
Kruiz - "A stoic people who keep to Venilus' northern reaches. The Kruiz are born collectors, dedicated to seeking out and archiving all manner of arcane entities, a task they undertake gladly for the protection of Venilus and all her people. A member of the Kruiz family can be identified by their dark skin and hair, standing out uniquely among members of all the others.”
Freivanni - "The loyal sister-family to the Auzandils and masters of all martial technique. The Freivanni live on fertile prairies and lead carefree lives, but behind this charming pretence lies a land of conspiracies rife with crime and violence. Tales that none will deny, yet neither will they acknowledge.”
Larke - "An economically-minded and charismatic noble family. The Larkes are immensely wealthy and politically savvy, making them quite dangerous in spite of their unassuming capabilities. They are unified by their sense of ambition, and find themselves aligned with the Auzandil family, where fellow like minded expansionists also place their cards.”
Equin - "Desert-dwelling industrialists who dominate the badlands of Venilus. The Equin are hardy folk who thrive in strife and danger, priding themselves on the technological marvel that is their firearms - weapons designed to place them on equal footing with the mages that dominate not only the continent, but the entire world.”
Lopt - "Overseeing Venilus from their mountainous vista, the domain of the Lopt family sits idly in the lands surrounding the capital, quietly content with their isolation. Bound to a demon from birth, the hair of a Lopt is robbed of its natural colour - the chilling white that remains serves as permanent reminder of their abhorrent contract.”
Mildoth - "Chaotic and diverse forest-dwellers. The Mildoth are peaceful, though they harbor an intense rivalry with the Larke family. They have a love for nature, a duty to protect life, and a natural talent for potions and familiars. By aligning themselves with the Lopt family, they hope to maintain the fragile peace that Venilus has known since the era of Champions, millennia ago.”
Myste - "The Myste, though generally aligned with the Lopt, carry out the undesirable business of each family. They stay out of public affairs, preferring the shadowy wetwork that drives Venilan politics. Branches of the Myste have little in common with one another. Many share the belief that the Myste, in their desperation to be recognised, resemble more of an organization than an actual family.”
Matrigold - "Blonde-haired scholars and hermits of common blood who convene in Liberande - the gargantuan complex of knowledge that doubles as their capital (and only) city. Their patrons are the Lopt family, to whom they pledge their knowledge and loyalty in exchange for protection.”
Falgrin - "A splintered family. The Falgrin practice both ritual and practical necromancy, though fettered by bureaucracy and wildly varied political positions. Their loyalty is like a pendulum; swinging between Lopt and Auzandil with every passing heir, though in the present their allegiances lie with the former.”
Mercenary - "Sellswords and specialists hired by the Prime Minister. Though they lack the inborn capabilities of great family members, they make up for it in talent and experience."
