RAGING RAGE THREAD OF RANTS
THIS IS HOW WE FEEL
THIS IS HOW WE FEEL
This rant has been triggered after the events of the past 3 seasons we have played, S4 S4.5 and Season Resonance. Older stuff has influenced it but those are the primary targets this time around.
Hello everybody and welcome to one of my rants. The topic for this rant is the past few seasons we have played and some mechanics I have had some issues with. I am seeing alot of the same things that hinder my ability to have fun during games and need to yell about it or go insane. If peope read this and take it into consideration that would also be great. So without further ado lets get starting seeing what annoys the Eclipse.
Omnomnomnom a.k.a The Hunger System: This mechanic has become more prevalent since C first implemented it in S3.5 and it has served the purpose of forcing players to act and not laze about taking their time. The idea is sound in my opinion and is a decent way of keeping the game moving without breaking immersion by something Out of Context. The problem is that the Hunger System seems to be failing its original purpose. Specifically in S4.5 and Season Resonance, food has been almost ridiculously scarce. The Gensokyu section off 4.5 had the hunger system to try and force us to not laze about in the no murders allowed situation, but it failed gloriously as even when all the players started trying to push the plot, we still went over the hunger systems time limits. Resonance only had enough food for everyone to live 6 days, for a grand total of twelve 12 hour game sessions. We had 18 players, so a wolf had to kill 17(You didnt know the other wolf so the chances that you pinpoint your fellow before you kill him is pretty low). 17 people with 144 Hours of gametime. This means you have to kill one person every 8 and a half hours to finish just after the deadline. Now lets apply what happened in our game. All the food was destroyed, halving the time available. 144 hours has now become 72. Now you have to kill someone every 4 and a quarter hours to finish as you die from hunger. Last thing now, lets assume I was the wolf and I work 30 hour weeks. I show up late to the game sessions or in other cases get off early so that I can sleep. Being VERY generous lets say I miss half of every game session. I am now down to 36 hours of active time where I am playing and this assumes I don't take any days off to recuperate or to do something else(I actually did take days off from the game!). I now need to kill someone every two hours I am playing to meet the deadline and not die from hunger. Its important that the games have motivation for the players to be active, but this system doesn't make me WANT to play. It makes me annoyed if something IRL comes up and I lose my chance of winning because of a system that punishes me for having a life. The hunger system can be useful if handled effectively, but more often than not stuff takes longer than it needs too or things get excessively accelerated.
IT WAS ME ALL ALONG, MASTERMIND! a.k.a Mastermind Plot Murders: This issue revolves pretty much entirely around S4 and S4.5. You would be hard pressed to find a player who loves the plot more than me. I live for the twists and the story behind each of the games. But at some point we need to ask the question of whether we are playing a Murder Mystery game, or a Mystery Game. I really enjoyed S4 even though alot of people said they didn't. Figuring out what was killing players mysteriously was fun and Air had told everyone he WOULD kill someone every day. That was a good use of Mastermind murder as it served as the backbone of the plot and kept players on their toes. People got angry at the end since nobody had decided to try and perform a murder besides the ones Air guarenteed. I believe S4.5 handled NPC murder much less effectively especially considering we were told there WOULDN"T BE ANY. The murder by Komaeda, and lets not argue about whether setting a trap that can kill is or isnt murder, was ridiculous as we assume the mastermind won't find a loophole in his own rules to F with players. If we are going to have to deal with NPC murders then please inform me at the start of the game or at least tell me it isn't impossible. I would argue about the final trial of 4.5 and NPC Junko as the murderer when we had a player who had already claimed to be Junko earlier in the game, but I was not able to investigate for the trial so benefit of the doubt there was enough evidence to realize an NPC Junko and not our Junko had done it. Impossible trials are a waste of my time and if you need to lie to me about the rules of the game to make a twist surprising, then something is wrong.
Its magic, I don't gotta explain **** a.k.a Plot holes: Ok guys, I understand it really cool to have superpowers or awesome segments where we can play like Super Saiyans. Sadly superpowers and murder mystery are not always a match made in heaven. Chaotic Reunion handled super powers exceptionally well since it based the entire game around that concept. People were prepared for it and it fit in with the world that had been created for the game. The problem is that now we are getting magic and superpowers in games where it doesn't make sense and only serves to confuse the **** out of players and make impossible murders. S4.5 had plot holes with more glowing OP immortal weapons than the season it is prequel too. We went from murder mystery to full on action game and then back. Zero explanation was given for the sudden Touhou mix with Dangan Ronpa. Just the the whole "It was an Illusion" thing. This really breaks immersion. It was a nice break but I couldn't take anything about the game seriously. Certain characters had super powers and others didn't balance was skewed in the favor of those who picked Touhou characters. Two universes were mixed together with no explanation. If you mix it like that make sure there is a reason for it besides "I wanted to." Because even though the world was a mix of DR and Touhou the plot was entirely Dangan Ronpa, with the despairing incident and everything. It was a splash of flavor that just did not mix with the meal. Season Resonance suffers from magic ****, but only in that it wasn't obvious that godlike powers were in play just by looking around. The idea of powers from songs is cool but we have seen it before. I expected a fairly hyper realistic experience since we were based on Rabbit Doubt essentially. Besides my own power I had no reason to consider having gods walking among us. This harms the game simply by making every death into the situation of "IT COULD HAVE BEEN OP **** WE DONT UNDERSTAND!!!"
One sided bull**** a.k.a No Balance: This one is a bit sore from my death in Season Resonance after firmly getting stomped by another player. Magic can be brought in if handled appropriately, but give any one person too much power and that is the end. They can roflstomp everyone in a very short time frame. In this case I will talk about a couple of powers I learned about after death of simply by seeing them in action. My power was that I could manipulate the laws of the world in a field around me. 3 Uses with a 10 minute clock on each of them. For the purposes of balance its important to know what a power does. Turns out in my field I could just do whatever I want. Just be god. I wasted alot of time researching laws to effectively use the field without killing myself, when it seemed my mastermind didn't really care. Learned that when my power was stolen by another power that auto triggers and he could ignore all those laws I talked about earlier just a simple "I disintegrate him" won him the day. A power that auto triggered, made them invincible, and stole the power of the person who used their power on them. Apparently justified by the fact it only had two uses. Broken because it didnt trigger when repeatedly hit by Saku's Mind reading power. But triggers when the edge of my field comes into contact. Selective Targetting. I assumed nobody had a automatic counter becuase Saku had been slapping everyone all game with his power. If the rules of the game and powers change on the fly and are not consistent then people are gonna get blindsided and killed for dumb reasons. I had to argue with Saku to get him to join the game since he was worried that Sova would be biased against him since they didn't get along. If his power isn't even good enough to trigger an automatic power counter and steal then it must be really bad. A gun with 1 bullet is better than a bottomless bucket of ****. This disconnect between what powers are capable of and not capable of was not set in stone well enough and what they can and can't do change on the fly based on the masterminds whims. Balance means when two people go at it they both have a chance to win, but alot of times there was no hope for one side. If I brace myself for something, its so I can act on a moments notice. Bracing to activate my song does not mean I activate my song. It means I want to have enough time TO activate my song if something occurs. Being told YOU ACTIVATE YOUR SONG is not cool. I probably would have activated it anyway under the circumstances, but the activation of my song was what guarenteed my demise. If counters and powers are ridiculously strong like this, they must be fully controlled by the players. Automatic stuff leaves too much in the hands of the mastermind and fights turn less into who is better and more into who has luck on what the mastermind decides will happen. Please put some effort into completely solidifying abilities so that stuff doesn't just work when you feel like it will.
I am a big kid now a.k.a 18+ Argument: Apparently this argument happened and I missed it. The agreement was that as long as their was a disclaimer it was ok. I am not gonna say we need to change back, but I want everybody to understand what 18+ meant of us during Season Resonance. During season resonance the only 18+ stuff that really occurred was finding the dead policeman, with his injuries, and everything Sin did to Saku. All it did was add a little bit of flavor text and ruin peoples' days. I understand this is a game and people can do what they want, but you need to understand that the rest of us want to play this game and have fun. If your fun prevents another player from playing, aka blinding them or breaking their limbs. Sin and Saku I am looking at you. Its important to be in character but recognize that if you injure them like that you are adding insult to injury, letting them live but not capable of really acting in game. No need to ruin each others fun in obscene ways.
Out of Context: Never thought I would have to rant about this **** again. Shows how wrong I was. For those who don't understand this is when you take a motive from outside the game, say me holding a grudge against Saku for eating my potato chips or something, and killing him for this reason. There is no way to trace it because no one but me and the victim knew about it. Predicting people acting OOC is basically impossible and destroys any semblance of character people had. Players do it, Mastermind do it, and I am sick of it. The quickest and easiest way to make somebody permanently leave the site and games or to earn yourself the title of the most hated player is to kill people with OOC motives. I will not stand for it in my games at all. From this point forward I am keeping a list of people who are caught OOC murdering and/or OOC stuff that hurts the experience for others. Names I take down will be Forbidden from joining my games. I am sick and tired of this.
Nice to meet you my name is clone#4 a.k.a False accounts: Ok this is getting ****ing ridiculous. Every time I turn around I see more false accounts showing up with players who already have accounts. WILL YOU PEOPLE STOP. If you want to get a new start then tell an admin and have them reset YOUR account and change your name. Change your skype name, hope that I don't realize. The amount of clone accounts on this site is way too high. A couple maybe for mastermind purposes, but we have alters now. I don't need 30 billion Proboards accounts to keep track of or an army of skype friends who are clones of other people I already have. Making side accounts just so you can have a little less suspicion thrown on you is not cool. You made your bed, sleep in it. Making an account just to hunt down one other player, great more OOC ****. Alternate accounts are now forbidden for my games. I know before hand and I alert players to who people are before hand. I will only waive this rule for VERY special circumstances. And considering I have alters, I can't think of any circumstances.
Mastermind Logic: Short one here. Mastermind logic is where a mastermind essentially plays god to alter stuff or prevent things from being thrown off track. Preventing force from opening a plot door is an example of this. Just try not to use this excessively, use it as a last resort please.
All for one, one for all: Guys, this game is about a group of people playing and competing with each other. Please treat each other as people and not as demons. Its hard to enjoy the game when we all yell at each other. Don't intentionally attack people because of who they are, or if they are an old player returning from a long hiatus. You know who you are. Stuff happens IRL and we come here to have fun, test ourselves, and do crazy stuff. Don't. Ruin. It.
For those people who don't read here is a TL;DR Version
1. The hunger system was a good idea, but its being used poorly and over accelerating games or killing people who don't have time to be on skype all day.
2. If a mastermind plans to murder the players need to know since it stagnates the game. Don't lie to me about rules and make up excuses to ignore your own rules to make a twist.
3. Please make sure whatever BS magic you come up with fits in with your universe and isn't just thrown in so that players can have god powers. It breaks immersion and hurts balance.
4. Balance your ****ing powers, it breaks the game for the weaker players and removes all sense of thought or strategy, just who got the best power.
5. 18+ has done a whole lotta nothing and has done nothing to increase my immersion besides some flavorful words like brains.
6. OOC motives and actions are idiotic and only serve to hurt peoples' feelings
7. Stop using fake accounts, they are annoying and flood both Skype and Proboards.
8. Mastermind logic is a last resort, plan so that you will never have to use it.
9. We are here to have fun together, don't be the one to ruin it.
I just want seasons to be successful and everyone to enjoy themselves. I don't consider myself a charismatic leader or you guys would listen to me when I asked for people to stop and control themselves. I always see results when I let loose big rants like this though. I am fighting to keep the site afloat because I fear that we will make enough people angry enough to leave that we won't have enough people for enjoyable games. So I want to extend this offer, if you guys get angry at somebody, then rant here with me about it. We can yell(type in all caps) and get angry(all caps curse words) and just relieve stress. Masterminds should come yell about players and players should yell about everything.
Alright, Rant Over. Go back to your business.
