Hello everyone,
I am adding this little thread to the Rules and Applications area to explain my own work situation as it affects hosting times and already HAS affected my start date. I want anyone who wants to play games hosted by me aware of some of the reasons my schedule may be affected so that no one is confused why I went missing at X time. If you don't feel like reading go ahead and scroll down, I'll have a TL;DR summary.
I work in the IT field, specifically with computers, servers, and networks. Skipping the major facets of my job, I manage a lot of these and have to keep them healthy. The problem is that because we manage companies who run 24/7, I have to be prepared to respond 24/7. Well what do you mean?
I get a text message from our system any time an important system goes down or a large problem is reported. General procedure is the person who is "On Call" has to respond and resolve. If that person doesn't respond in X minutes, I and everyone else seeing the message have to respond. This creates a tough situation if I am in the middle of something, say hosting an MMG session, and have to suddenly turn away to work on something. This combined with the fact that alot of things I have to do for customers has to happen at night since I can't reboot production systems in the middle of the day.
What does this mean for MMG? Essentially this boils down to there being situations where I have to cancel sessions on certain days. If I get notified of a late night activity and it overlaps with MMG, I will alert the players and simply not host. Ideally I would do that at least a day in advance. The random alerts will result in session slowdown. I operate at a desk with four monitors. Two of which go to my personal computer and two to my work computer. If I have to react to an alert I'll be turning back and forth in between PMs and actions on MMG. This WILL slow down my response time if it occurs. I'll do my best to put a note in chat when I am in those scenarios.
These late night tasks have been the reason I have delayed the game a week. I have already pulled an almost all nighter and worked till 1:30 AM the next night AND I have four more similar tasks before the end of this week.
Apologies for the delay and I hope no one has been adversely affected!
TL;DR: My job requires lots of after hours work and it cannot be wholly predicted. I will have to cancel/slow down sessions depending on if alot of issues are arising at work.
