Eclipse's Tips and Tricks
I plan to go give some tips and tricks for what I consider the three main ways to participate in games. As a Mastermind. As a Murderer. Or as a Detective. Please remember these are some things I consider good tips and tricks, but unless one of you is my clone and hasn't told me, none of you are me so don't consider these as rules or anything. Think of it as a kind of advice. This time we handle the detective side of the trio.
Detective...ing Tips and Tricks
Know thy Enemy: The Mastermind's Personality: For totally new players or masterminds, this point is very difficult to follow. When going into a season its EXTREMELY helpful to know who the mastermind is and their style of masterminding. This is hard to research if you haven't played with the mastermind before, but perhaps some choice questions to players who have participated with a mastermind before could help. This is important because you can usually cross off certain kinds of examinations when you play with certain masterminds. For example, C|Drias tends to have findable locations or objects with no hints in the room description. You may have to examine the wall to find a path into an alleyway, where as you might have expected that to just simply be part of the movement links as an obvious thing. Some masterminds do this and some don't. If you know C does it then you can just go ahead and do that in his games, whereas if you know someone else doesn't do that, you are probably safe not making those kinds of examinations. You can also make reasonable guesses as to where they are hiding plot documents or what kind of documents. Perhaps one mastermind prefers hiding plot in NPC conversations and another may prefer lots of text journals. Knowing the mastermind as a detective can help you optimize your detective...ing as you try to search the map for plot.
Know thy Friends: The Other Players: Just as with the mastermind, knowing the other players can really help you keep on rolling in game. If someone is playing as a friendly and open character then perhaps you can make better progress by trying to team up and solve plot together, perhaps they found something you missed! In the same breadth, try to know who would hide information from you, or worse lie about what they found. Talking with the right or wrong people can both accelerate or slow down your understanding of the plot. In addition, knowing the people can help you avoid getting horribly murdered. Avoid people you believe would take advantage of you as a helpless victim and know when they start prowling around. Just like with masterminds, knowing the other players can help optimize your detective performance, as well as keep you alive!
Fear the Night: Times to be Active: As a detective you have a couple main goals. A. Solve the Plot. B. Don't Die. Avoiding death tends to be more difficult than it seems, especially since you are less likely to be carrying out murder centric items to defend yourself and you are easier prey for murder players. That said, you need to keep an eye on the clock when you play and where you play. If its late at night and only a few players are active and you have decided to investigate that dark cabin a few miles from the main area of the game.... You are just giving someone the easiest murder of their lives. Murderers have to strike where they won't be seen if they want to succeed. You as prime game need to try and avoid these times and places. Be aware of when the majority of players go to sleep or leave for different things as when the majority of people are gone, the few who remain CAN and MIGHT try to strike you down. Try to move for dangerous to explore areas when activity is high and return to safe rooms and hiding places when people and "night" starts to fall.
Whatever improbable....: Process of Elimination: Try to solve murders as well as the plot by process of elimination, make theories as you go and crush them with evidence as you find it. Murders can be VERY creative sometimes and the plot can be totally bonkers too. Only toss out ideas that are totally impossible. If you have to make a decision, roll with the more probable, but if you simply try to pick out only probable options then you may find yourself with 10 options and no plot you find can eliminate them. Think a little bigger at every step and try to downsize as you go, the mastermind probably won't be giving you the pieces of the puzzle in a way that fits together right away.
My handy dandy notebook: Taking Notes: Keep a word or .txt document or SOMETHING on your own computer where you compile everything you have found. It REALLY helps later one when trying to solve the plot to have things together in one place instead of having to dig through a skype log of your conversation with the mastermind. It saves you alot of pain and suffering later, so just do it!
If anyone has an other tips or tricks to being a detective, feel free to post them below.
