Before the Gaiaphage
The Alteir Corporation hired a medical researcher named Dylan Arum for their interest in his theories about cell mutations. Alteir created a new branch in Lacren Town and funded a secret laboratory on the outskirts for Arum to do his work. However, Arum couldn't get a breakthrough and wasted a lot of money. Just when Arum was on the brink of failure, a meteorite landed in an abandoned mine close to town. This is where the story begins.
The Gaiaphage Lands
After the Gaiaphage landed in the mine, mutations began to spread across the town. Arum quickly noticed the change and tracked the Gaiaphage down. There he took samples of the Gaiaphage's cells and returned to his lab. He instantly produced incredible results with the Gaiaphage's cells, while the Alteir Corporation observed the appearance of the mutations. Eventually Alteir grew uneasy of Arum's experiments and how the mutations were affecting the population. They sent a task force of security to remove Arum from the equation. But Arum had grown too powerful with his mutation ability and easily suppressed the attack.
At this point, the Gaiaphage began to move. It called out to Arum, and to a select few in the town. It told them to complete the Fusion Formula, the God of Life's plan to induce Ascension in a non-god entity and turn them into a god. Arum was consumed by the whispers of the Gaiaphage and fell into insanity, constantly doubting himself. He halted his experiments, and this is when the other person the Gaiaphage had called out to made their move. Nagisa Hazuki, driven by the Gaiaphage's whispers to complete the Fusion Formula, attacked Arum's lab with the help of his accomplice, Jay. Jay killed everyone in the lab, but was bested by Arum. Hazuki then defeated Arum with his superior electricity draining mutation ability, and took control of the lab. Arum escaped, but Hazuki didn't mind. With full control over the lab, Hazuki began his scheme.
He needed to complete the Fusion Formula in conceptual form, then gather all of the components. Three catalysts were required, three people with fully evolved mutation abilities. With the Gaiaphage as a medium, one could achieve Ascension and godhood. Hazuki sent his other accomplice, Koro to gather three people suitable for the fusion. However, the people that Koro gathered all escaped, and Hazuki was forced to go and gather them all up himself. Just to be safe, Hazuki created a drug that would induce memory-loss, making the people forget they had mutation abilities, and set out. He went around town subduing every one of the players with his Lightning Mutation, and dragged all of them to the lab. He was held up at the school from two exceptionally powerful players, but that's another story. With everyone possessing a mutation ability captured, including his two accomplices which he betrayed, and injected with the memory-loss drug, Hazuki was set.
However, with all of the mutation ability holders gathered in one cell, several of their abilities triggered by pure chance, and they managed to escape the laboratory. Hazuki panicked for a moment, but realized that even if they escaped, they would be under the effects of the memory loss and would be easy to recapture. Instead, Hazuki went to the abandoned mine to collect the Gaiaphage, the final piece of the puzzle. And here is where the plan went awry.
The Barrier Appears
Hereiss Aelori, the God of Notions, had been revived by the appearance of the Gaiaphage. With her latent power awakened, and her mutation further enhancing them, she created a barrier over the town. Whether it was out of fear of the gods approaching, or some instinct triggered inside of her, Aelori raised the barrier which removed from the town all but those with the strongest desires.
With the creation of the barrier, the mine collapsed, trapping Hazuki inside with the Gaiaphage. However, Hazuki had a backup plan in mind. With his mutation ability, he was able to take control of Dylan Arum, and use him as a puppet to lure the other players into the mine.
Meanwhile, above the barrier, the God of Distortions, Hereiss Qionraem, had detected the revival of his sister, and was moving to kill her. But he was interrupted by the God of Weaponry, Mesrin Liarent, dispatched by Nir to destroy all of the Gaiaphages the God of Life, Ilenskvel, had sent across the universe. The two gods, single-minded in their objectives, began to fight above the barrier, their excess energy slowly weakening it over time.
Thus begins the game of Tertiary Fusion.
Three Gods Descend
After Ilenskvel had joined Qionraem and Liarent's battle, the barrier cracked open from the excess energy, allowing all three gods to descend. Ilenskvel immediately resurrected several possessors of mutation abilities, and sent them out to gather more for the Gaiaphage to absorb. With three absorbed, the Fusion Formula would take effect and the Ascension would begin.
In order to prevent this, Liarent began his search for Ilenskvel and the Gaiaphage. He encountered several players at the entrance to the school, killing one of them in attempt to lessen the number of catalysts the Gaiaphage could absorb. Eventually Liarent found Ilenskvel, and the two held a short skirmish in the residential district of the town.
Meanwhile, Qionraem confronted his sister Aelori in the secret library. Aelori learned the truth of what her brother had gone through, and was killed by Qionraem, along with Touwa and Kitty who had come to defend her. With the death of Aelori, the barrier over the town was lifted, and all those still alive could escape.
The Aftermath
Reimu Mystio - The local priestess's corpse was found on a street in the residential district. Forensic analysis showed that her death was caused by a poison of unknown origin. Her death remains a mystery to this day.
Saki - After being resurrected by Ilenskvel, Saki confronted her murderer, Shinonome Azuma in a battle to the death. However, the barrier disappeared halfway, interrupting the fight. Later evidence showed that many deaths were related to Saki, however the circumstances of the barrier allowed Saki just enough leeway to slip through the grasp of the authorities.
Kurai Kaze - Kurai was found dead in the city square after the barrier fell. The cause of death was unknown, and was subsequently never discussed in detail. It may have had something to do with the green slime the Alteir Corporation security extracted from his body and took away to study in secret.
Shinonome Azuma - After being resurrected by Ilenskvel, Azuma attempted to gather catalysts for the Gaiaphage. However, Liarent interrupted the process, and instead she confronted Saki whom she had killed before. Their battle was interrupted halfway and Azuma was taken into custody. Her family was found dead, but the circumstances were so strange that she was never deemed a suspect for their deaths. Azuma was sent back into foster care, much to her dissatisfaction.
Amyth - As the first one to escape the barrier, Amyth was also the first to tell the authorities of what happened inside. Due to this, Amyth gained fame as the primary survivor of the Lacren Barrier Incident and appeared on many interviews afterwards. However he still mourns the loss of his girlfriend Sayaka, and regrets not saving her to this day.
Sayaka Miki - Having been convinced by Hazuki to become one of the catalysts for the Fusion Formula, Sayaka was killed by Kazuya in attempts to prevent Hazuki from achieving his plans. Perhaps suicide might have been a better option for this poor depressed girl...
Habara - Habara's body was found inside her house, the cause of death was starvation. Her death puzzled many because there was still food inside her refrigerator when her house was searched.
Kitty - It took a while for Ilenskvel's resurrection to reach Kitty, and when it did, she found herself in the middle of Qionraem's confrontation with Aelori. Her body was found cut in half in Lacren Memorial Library afterwards.
Jay - After a thorough search through the secret laboratory that had exploded, Jay was taken into custody by the Alteir Corporation for crimes of murdering the laboratory staff. However, there was no hard evidence, so Jay was released a week afterwards.
Sonozaki Shion - During Liarent's battle with Ilenskvel in the residential district, the excess energy flooded the area, resulting in Shion's death. Her body was found in perfect health, puzzling doctors all over the world regarding the cause of death.
Felix of Vale - Felix was one of the first to encounter Liarent, and in an attempt to save his friend Touwa's life, he sacrificed himself. His body was found and his death treated as a homicide, although the culprit would never come to light.
Kazuya Minegishi - Kazuya was the second to escape the barrier, a while after Amyth. After interfering with Hazuki and the Gaiaphage's plans, and witnessing Aelori die to Qionraem, Kazuya left through the barrier, and although he didn't gain as much fame as Amyth, he preferred it that way.
Kyouji Kuzuhona - Kyouji's body was found in the city square along with Kurai's. The Alteir Corporation once again covered up the circumstances of his death, and took his body into their custody.
Hazuki Nagisa - After failing to gather the three catalysts required for the Fusion Formula, Hazuki and the Gaiaphage escaped through the woods when the barrier fell. Perhaps we shall see them again someday...
Izumi Akazawa - Izumi was found sleeping inside the media center after the barrier fell. She was in a coma for several months before finally waking up and saying she had a dream she was on vacation and couldn't get out of it.
Koro - After being resurrected by Ilenskvel, Koro attempted to bring various catalysts before the God of Life. However, Kazuya found him and killed him again, this time in a way in which he couldn't be brought back to life. Koro's body was found later, his death treated as a homicide, the culprit never being brought to light.
Touwa Nemu - Touwa discovered the secret to Aelori's past, that Hereiss Aelori was the God of Notions and sister to the God of Distortions, Hereiss Qionraem. When Qionraem confronted Aelori, Touwa argued for Aelori's sake, but in the end was unable to convince Qionraem to spare her, and died with Aelori in the library.
Zer Tam - After being knocked out by the God of Distortions, Zer Tam was absorbed by the Gaiaphage as the first and only victim of Hazuki's scheme. Although the Alteir Corporation dispatched many search parties, his body was never found after the barrier fell.
Hereiss Aelori - Aelori died tragically at the hands of her own brother, Hereiss Qionraem. Despite many attempts by Touwa Nemu to save her, Aelori was unable to overcome her brother's despair, and in the end, perished...
