The Story of Blood and a Promise
The backstory and plot of the Murder Mystery RP Game Season Blood Shift
By: EclipseZwolf
Once there existed a world upon which the great gears of an incredible people turned. A people who constructed beautiful masterpieces and complex machines in pursuit of achieving something far greater than just themselves. A race that prided themselves on their knowledge and skill, humans. A prideful race whose skill was only matched by their own foolishness. They built massive machines and terrible contraptions that consumed the very energy of the world and destroyed that which had brought them into being. The people began to fear an end to their age of dominance and searched fervently for a new way to power their ever changing creations. A great researcher by the name of Aeturnus arose from the ranks of his fellows to solve the problem that his own people had created.
Aeturnus raced against the clock against the impending doom of getting consumed with the rest of his world. He searched for an energy that could rival the fires of the sun, the cold of the depths of space, and the force with which the very planets and stars moved. He tested the power of lightning, the power of fire, the power of ice, the power of light, the power of dark, and the power of life. The first proved to last to short a time and the second destroyed the user after a short time. The third served only to hold the fabric of things together and not to make the great machines of his people move. The fourth and fifth were unable to be grasped and molded, a power that was simply beyond reach as it lay in a different realm. The last, the sixth of his topics, proved to be different.
The power of life itself, Aeturnus had dismissed the idea of powering a dying world with the energy of beings that themselves appeared and vanished like a summer’s breeze. He had been unable to find a solution and with the last dregs of his hope dwindling he turned to his final experiments. He found little that he did not expect. The energy of life burned stronger than the brightest flame and could bind the world together like nothing else, but was doomed to fade. It was then that he found a connection, a connection between the ephemeral and the eternal. Through the blood of living beings he found a gateway, a path to a bottomless source of energy.
He found an unknown particle that flowed along with the blood of life, a byproduct of the constant death and birth that occurs on the inside of a body. He dubbed this particle Aeturnums, after both himself and the latin word that translates to eternal. His hope again rekindled he returned to his experiments with a feverish excitement, the joy of seeing a light at the end of an endlessly dark tunnel, an escape from the despair of an inescapable future. He began to test how this particle could be manipulated and how it could be used as an energy. He discovered that for the energy of an Aeturnum to be used, then the original owner of the blood from which the particle was born had to be the one to manipulate it. These experiments required that a medium be created from the persons own blood from which they could bend and manipulate their own Aeturnum.
Using his incredible knowledge he constructed a legendary experiment dubbed by many as the “Bloody Beginning” he drew the lifeblood of his own body straight out of his own heart. He then bound his blood inside an item of his own specific creation, an item that would have stunned even the greatest of scientists in its complexity and it sheer brilliance. A weapon with which Aeturnus could hold back the end of an age. A weapon with which he could fight and halt the flow of time for all eternity if that was what it took to keep his people alive. He called this his “Blood Weapon.” He bound his blood into that of a large clock where instead of gears and clockwork ran his own very lifeblood. It was said that all those who looked upon the clock saw it pulse with its owner’s very own heartbeat.
He was often seen carrying the face of the clock which beat with his own heart as a shield and in the other hand the long Minute hand which glistened as if it was always covered in fresh blood. The Hour hand was always seen hanging off his belt in a scabbard that did little more but ascent the deep blue of the blade making it look as if was just one great big conjunction of the veins in his body. No one claims to have scene where the Second hand is hidden or what it looks like, but rumors state that Aeturnus keeps it close to his heart so that he may never forget the sound of the clock running down on his people and that the very movement of the hand seems to bend the world around it.
The Aeturnum were capable of accessing the Space-Time Continuum and drawing its power back to the user, bending and molding it to their will. A power that did not destroy the environment and had no foreseeable bottom to its great power. It was then that Aeturnus made a promise to the people of his world. He stood before all the people of his world and declared this, “As long as my lifeblood flows through this clock and I hold time’s power within my grasp, the time of humans shall never come to an end!” This was promise he held near and dear to his heart, for having bound his blood to the clock, he found himself immortal. If a blade felled him or a bullet pierced him, he would simply recover and could ignore the very existence of the wound. He became eternal in both name and existence.
The world reshaped itself into a shape befitting its new energy source. Problems faded away and an era of prosperity began for the world and its people. Aeturnus constructed a great citadel from which to watch the world around him. It was a grand apparatus of moving gears and flowing blood that stemmed from Aeturnus’s own undying heart and looked like a grand clock tower whose height seemed to put the very clouds to shame. It was aptly named Time’s Tower. Here Aeturnus continued to reach into the depths of the Aeturnum and seek the bottom of this energy source as Aeturnus was not going to believe it was unending unless he never found the end, and he had all eternity to keep looking.
In a strange twist of fate, something happened that Aeturnus could see as ironic. Aeturnus could never find the bottom of the power and realized that the fact that it was indeed bottomless was going to have the same result as reaching the bottom of their old energy. He was eternal because he had been the first to access the bottomless pit and was its link into the world. He was the floodgate for a never ending river of blood and should he fail to hold it back, then his world would end being buried in its own energy. He found that as eternal as his body and mind were, his soul was not and steadily weakened under the strain of holding back the flood that was the end. He spread word of his discovery among his closest colleagues and together they dubbed the event the “Bloody Ending.”
Aeturnus realized that he himself would not last forever against the pure energy, and once more set out to find a solution. He discovered that his blood was that which the energy was escaping and that it was the lynchpin of the world, holding everything together. He had also learned something from his long time in the tower. If multiple people found themselves bound together by a strong emotion then their Aeturnums would synchronize and that either of the people involved in the link could control all their own Aeturnums and their partners. He found that this process also reinforced the strength of the one who seized control and that they could manipulate Aeturnums with far greater ease then before. Aeturnus had found his solution. He needed to forge an even greater person whose control of Aeturnums would make his own look weak and then have that person link and take the Aeturnums of the blood that held the world together. Then Aeturnus could rest and his promise would remain fulfilled. His blood would still flow and time’s power would always be in his grasp. The grasp would just be that of another who had inherited his will and taken his blood.
Thus Aeturnus began to plan the experiment. He had to construct a controlled environment from which he could have the candidates for succession forge and break bonds of emotion, taking greater and greater power among themselves. He did not have the time nor the effort to bring about a successor through the power of kind emotions as those took too long to build and served to break too easily. He needed a strong mind and a strong will, one that would not be stopped at anything in their goal to survive and control. Aeturnus saw that in the moment of bloody conflict where one person was stricken down by another that their Aeturnums linked and they would grow stronger. The heat of that moment was the fire of the forge that he would use to make his successor. He would gather the greatest minds and people from across the world and hold his final event the “Bloody Succession.”
He would gather them and lock them in the top of Time’s Tower. He would forge for each of them a blood weapon and place a single drop of his own blood in the weapons so that they could take over Aeturnus entirely when the time arose. He would then erase all of their memories of the events leading up to the succession and their knowledge of the blood weapons. They would only know that they were locked in some monstrous structure and told to kill each other to escape. Their minds would be strained to the breaking point and they would lash out at one another. Blood would flow and blood would grow stronger. If the dedication and power of the blood ever grew weaker then Aeturnus would use his power to shift the world back to the point where the event began and the power that had been gained in blood would be all that remained from the previous trials. He would repeatedly reforge them as many times as need be and create the greatest successor to the role of Eternity. The one whose mind triumphed over the tribulations and grew to be the strongest of all the people on the planet and existence.
They would be the one. They would be given the right to ascend to the very tip of the clock tower. They would at the very pinnacle of time itself become the center gear of the clock of the world. They would replace Aeturnus and take up the mantle. Eternity would once again be Eternity and the “Bloody Ending” would be delayed. This would be a tale of blood, one drenched in hate and love, friendship and betrayal. Blood would be all that remains in the end though, after all that is what they say, “Nothing is thicker than Blood.”
